My gf loooooooves popcorn. She usually pops her own with our !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! , but when a popcorn craving strikes, she’s not above the pre-popped stuff. Last night she brought home a bag of !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! . Something on the bag is a bit...off?

Right below “Premium Gourmet White Popcorn,” there’s another label that says the popcorn in this bag is “Extra Tender.” I don’t think I’ve ever heard popcorn described as tender. Is tenderness even really a quality of good popcorn?

When I see the word “tender” I start thinking about slow cooked meats. “Mmmm, this brisket is so tender!” Not popcorn. At no point in my popcorn-buying thought process do I think, “only the tenderest of pre-popped popcorn will do for my sophisticated palette.”

Isn’t good popcorn supposed to be light and airy and fluffy and crunchy? Maybe they’d say something like “real movie theater taste” ? Tender is waaaaay down the list of ways that popcorn might be described as desirable. But that’s what the folks at Old Dutch snack foods decided to put on the label.

(The Whirley Pop is a stovetop popcorn popper where there’s this little spinny wire thing in the bottom that turns with a crank. It keeps the kernels moving around in the bottom so your popped popcorn doesn’t stick and burn. She got ours at a garage sale for a couple bucks. It is well worth the $19.99 or whatever it would cost at retail.)

No no, they meant Extra Tinder . The bag is on the market, looking to hook up with some caramel.

Its not referencing the Popcorn’s texture, but it alludes to its use. You must treat this popcorn with the utmost care and tenderness.

It’s the opposite of half-pop. Where that is ridiculously crunchy, to the fear of breaking teeth. This is for people who may not even have teeth.

My father-in-law is in love with the bagged popcorn from Valley Popcorn. He always has a bag at home and frequently brings them over for football games and the like. We have a bag on our table from their last visit.

I won't lie, its some of the best pre-popped corn I've ever had, but I still prefer fresh.

They’re just marketing to our increasingly aging populace.

Tender is marketing-speak for “won’t break the seal on your dentures”.
